Our book of the month for May 2018: “The Social Affair” by Britney King reviewed in collaboration with Halos Library
Loved “The Social Affair” by Britney King. This is a disturbing psychological thriller that had me gripped from start to finish. I finished this book in about 2 hours. I just couldn’t stop!
A gorgeous couple Josie and Grant walks into the coffee shop that Izzy works in. Thoughts of the couple consume Izzy to the point where she begins to stalk them on social media. Izzy is so captivated with Josie and Grant that she’ll do anything to insert herself into their lives.
Told in alternating perspectives between Izzy and Josie, The Social Affair is an addictive twisted read that delves into the darkest aspects of marriage and obsession.
What I really liked was King’s incorporation of modern day stalking. In the real world, we can pretty much look into the lives of anyone with any social media presence – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.. and in this book, Instalook. The representation of Josie constantly posting, hashtagging and continually checking her phone for how many likes she received, how to engage her followers, etc. was extremely realistic. It also goes to show, again, how what you see on the internet isn’t always a true representation of what happens behind closed doors. After all, we all want people to think we are happy, right? Just how much of your self-esteem comes from your online presence?
I was very impressed by the authors writing style, it was a very easy smooth read that kept me hooked until the very end. The characters were well developed and it was full of twists and turns. Just when I thought I had it figured out Britney King gave me another piece and made me reconsider, sometimes changing my perspective of the characters. It is intense at times with some breath holding and chilling moments that had me anxious yet curious about what was coming next.
This was an easy read that you will want to finish in one sitting. It has the perfect balance of intrigue, dark & suspense. I literally inhaled this story yet I didn’t want it to end. No matter how I tried I couldn’t predict how the story was going to unfold. Absolutely loving this the author. I can’t wait to read more of her work.
Highly recommend this!
